What Is Silage Film?
Silage film is used as a hay wrap to store crops and minimize losses from storage and handling until the hay is used for feed. By stretch wrapping around baled silage, the film maintains a nearly airtight environment to preserve the crop’s value. The silage film keeps the silage safe from the elements. It also retains the nutrients in the crop and slows the decomposition of silage left in the field until it can be gathered and distributed. Baled and wrapped silage also undergoes a fermentation process that can increase the nutrient content of the silage and make it easier to digest.
The film is used with a round hay and grass bale wrapping machine. This machine is at the end of a conveyor belt and can move with the harvester in the field. The baler automatically wraps the silage in a cylinder, then the hay wrap encircles the bale of hay and wraps the silage tightly.
What Is Silage Wrap Made From?
Our silage bale wrap is made from durable linear low-density polyethylene (PE-LLD).
This puncture- and tear-resistant silage protection film has a rated thickness of 25 μm. Each packaged film roll is 1,500 m in length, 75 cm in width, and 26.86 kg in weight. Its longitudinal strain is at 65 %, and its 70 % stretch is 11.3 N/mm² (10.0 N/mm² min. requirement for each stretch percentage).
Our grass bale or hay wrap is white and free of waviness and pores. The opaque quality of the film protects its contents from the sun’s heat and regulates the fermentation of the silage. The oxygen permeability of the film (one layer, unstretched) at .02 bar was determined to be 1,681 cm³/(m² ∙ d). This is less than the tolerated maximum permeability of 1,800 cm³/ (m² ∙ d) in 24 hours.
