For fresh food companies (catering, wholesale, retail), product freshness is key to business survival.

MMP Corporation understands how much your brand's reputation depends on maintaining the efficiency and hygienic safety of your supply chain.

We manufacture a line of three M Wrap food preservation plastic films for home, catering, and industrial use. The catering and industrial use films can keep your perishable food products safe, clean, and presentable and help your brand succeed in the hyper-competitive fresh food industry.

We'll explain food packaging types and their importance in the fresh food industry.

Food industry packaging extends the shelf life of products

Three Types of Container Packaging

Three types of food industry packaging matter. We'll explain the uses and differences of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging.

Primary Packaging

Many fresh food distributors and catering companies focus on primary packaging, which ensures freshness, hygiene, compliance, and sustainability.

This is the packaging in direct contact with the products. Its main purpose is to keep them safe from the surrounding elements. The packaging may also contain printed or labeled product information, instructions, compliance certifications, and branding.

The different types of food packaging materials can include:

  • Flexible and rigid plastic is a lightweight, cost-effective, and versatile solution commonly used for wrap films, trays, bottles, and pouches.

  • Metal, such as aluminum and bi-metal alloys used for lined cans and tins, can be ideal for products requiring extended shelf life and airtight storage.

  • Glass is durable and chemically stable. It's suitable for sauces, beverages, and pickled items, but it's heavier and more fragile during shipping.

  • Paper and cardboard are lightweight, sustainable, printable, and versatile. This packaging is widely used for boxes, cartons, and sleeves.

  • Barrier & Modified-Atmosphere Films are multi-layer films designed to prevent product oxygen, moisture, and contamination and can extend perishable goods' shelf life.

Secondary packaging provides added protection

Secondary Packaging

Companies that deliver their fresh food products to a broader area of retailers may also focus on the hygienic and safety benefits of secondary packaging.

Secondary packaging has two main purposes. The first is to facilitate the movement and delivery of fresh food items by supplying packaging that enables more primary packages to be shipped together. The second is to act as a backup in preserving the hygienic properties of the primary packaging.

Examples of both purposes include:

  • Cardboard cases holding individual beer or wine bottles

  • Plastic film bundling an order of several fresh food containers together

  • Plastic rings around the tops of beverage cans

Tertiary Packaging

Only companies that deliver bulk loads of perishable foods typically focus on tertiary packaging. This is the outermost layer of packaging.

It’s the last layer to be added and the first to be opened at the product’s final destination. Tertiary materials for food packaging can include:

  • Plastic pallet wraps

  • Corrugated cases

  • Metal drums

  • Large containers

Factors in Choosing Food Packaging Materials

Manufacturers and distributors of fresh food products should weigh several factors before deciding on the best type of packaging for their food products. The factors include:

  • Shelf life of food products: Perishable foods often require barrier or modified-atmosphere film packaging, along with suitable secondary packaging, to guarantee sufficient shelf life to be profitable.

  • Safety and compliance: Packaging must meet strict food safety regulations and standards.

  • Sustainability: Examine the suitability of recyclable, reusable, and biodegradable materials.

  • Cost and practicality: Materials should balance protection, aesthetics, and efficiency for manufacturers and consumers, and you should arrive at a cost-effective solution that fulfills all these parameters.
