Busy warehouses and shipping depots are facing increasing pressure to increase the speed and efficiency of their operations. The business model of online orders with next-day order fulfillment has re-shaped warehouse and shipping.
Warehouses are carrying a greater variety of items, and the current systems employed are increasing the speed at which the items can be located, filled, billed, and shipped. Employees working in the warehouse and shipping depots are also expected to increase their speed and efficiency to maintain the increased rate of the supply chain instigated by the automation of today’s warehousing and shipping technology.
The Established Importance of Wrapping Pallets
Since the early 1970s, wrapping pallets with layers of linear, low-density polyethylene has proven cost-effective, increasing pallet stability with shipping, reducing product damage and worker injuries, and enabling precise inventory control.
Today, with an emphasis on online ordering and next-day delivery, warehouse managers are exploring all avenues of their operations to find ways to reduce the time between orders and delivery. These managers have discovered a new tool called pre-stretched film, which can help increase the speed and efficiency of hand-wrapping and machine-wrapping pallets.
What is Pre-stretched Film?
The pre-stretched film, also known as a pre-stretched wrap, is a polyethylene plastic film that's stretched to 90% of its capacity at the factory after manufacturing. The stretching reinforces the polymer molecules, making the film stronger and more resistant to tearing and punctures. Its use offers several benefits to workers in high-volume warehousing and shipping operations.
Quick Application in Busy Warehouse and Shipping Operations
Pre-stretched film speeds up the application by tightening automatically. It also reduces the number of wraps needed to secure a pallet of goods. Workers don’t have to use as much force when using pre-stretched film. They also don’t have to stretch it as much as regular pallet wrap products to achieve the same holding force. This allows them to work quickly and efficiently.
More Stable Loads
Pre-stretched film has a higher strength-to-gauge ratio than normal stretch film. Thinner gauges of film can provide more holding force, which provides more stability to loads during shipping, storage, or movement with pallet jacks or forklifts.

Reduced Safety Risk
Because the film is stronger and more resistant to tears and punctures, it also poses less of a safety risk to workers and products. Sharp corners and edges of products on a pallet are less likely to pierce the pre-stretch film and cause potential injury or damage. Heavy items or boxes are also less likely to break through the protective layer of film and fall off the pallet, again reducing the risk factor.
When used properly with the gauges of the pre-stretched film determined, and subsequently aligned with the weight of the pallet items, pre-stretched wrap offers increased safety, increased operational speed, and efficiency.
Easier to Handle and Manage
Pre-stretched rolls of film are lighter and easier to manage, as the pre-stretching process reduces the gauge thickness. This reduces fatigue in workers working long hours and makes it easier to carry the rolls with them for quick hand-wrapping jobs. It's also easier and faster to change the rolls in palette-wrapping machines.
More Economical to Use
Being thinner means a pre-stretched roll of film lasts longer and covers more pallets, making it a more economical choice for managers looking to reduce warehouse and shipping costs as much as possible.
Explore Pre-stretched Wrap from MMP Corp
MMP Corporation has created M Stretch® High-performance Stretch Film. This film is manufactured by pre-stretching our high-quality M Stretch® plastic wrap to increase the film tension and optimize its usage. Our film is user-friendly and requires less physical strength to use than normal pallet wrap products while delivering higher strength and holding force.
Our pre-stretch film rolls weigh less than half of standard rolls and provide as much as three times the length of conventional film per volume, making them eco-friendly and significantly reducing handling, packaging, and storage costs. The film also offers high clarity for more effective inventory control. It allows RFID scanners to easily scan barcodes underneath the pre-stretch wrap.
